Bruce Gourley, an eminent Baptist historian, through extensive research, has provided understanding of the theological and political diversity of Baptists in Georgia leading up to our "war between the states". It was a period when Baptists were emerging from "outsiders" to being "insiders" in the Protestant community. With quotations from sermons, letters, and associational minutes Corley has given a clear and very readable account of the prejudices, misconceptions, and realities of understanding among Baptists during this transitional period in our country's history. Without directly saying so, this book points out the fallacy of one's assuming an understanding of God. Every Baptist, every Protestant, should read Diverging Loyalties.

I found Dr. Gourley's book very enlightening to how Baptist dealt with the Civil War, separation of church and state, autonomy of the local church, and the slavery issue. As a Baptist, I found this helpful to understand some of our history and to see how early Baptist actually lived out what we proclaim as doctrines dear to our heart. You can tell Dr. Gourley did some thorough research and his use of actual quotes from local churches and associations was entertaining.
