I just finished reading Laureen's newly published e-book A Career in Medical Coding and found it very informative.What I really liked most were the many interviews with actual coders in almost every chapter. This book is good for those who wonder if coding is for them as well as for those who have already chosen coding as a career option but may not have much experience in it yet. That is where I find myself. I know I've already "chosen" it but what is the best route for getting educated ? What direction am I hoping to go with it? Do I want to pursue a degree? Certification? Both? Which one first????Right off the bat I loved chapter 2. A Day in the Life of a Coder. This chapter includes interview with several coders who share the type of coding they do and what a "typical" day for them may be like. What is the environment in which they work? Are there slow periods or "cycles" to the work? Etc.There is an excellent chapter: Is a Career in Medical Coding Right for You? She presents 9 or 10 skill sets that play a huge roll in being a successful coder (someone who not only can code but actually enjoys and enhances the profession of coding). I'll quote a very small portion here that helped me recognize why I'm loving it so much: "Detail oriented people, those who love learning something new and perfectionists are well suited to become coders. If you love to read and solve puzzles, this could be an ideal job for you..........Are you an independent decision-making, detail-oriented type who doesn't require a lot of interaction with people? If you answered yes, medical coding may be a good fit for you."Each chapter had input from those who have been in the coding profession for several years and have witnessed its many transformations. Each chapter ends with "Key Takeaways" that sum up very well the new wisdom you come away with.This gem is loaded with tips on education and getting that job as well.Thank you Laureen for putting it all together. Thanks too for all who helped you and gave of their time to share their experiences with us.
In 2006, I got a degree in Medical Transcription. I loved it and couldn't wait to find a job. But it never panned out. Just a few short months after graduating, voice recognition software arrived on a the scene basically elimating the need for transcriptionists. I also found it frustrating that it is next to impossible to get an entry-level transcription job. The few jobs out there require 3-5 years experience. How the heck are you supposed to get experience if no one will hire you and give you the opportunity to prove yourself? But I love the medical field and have wanted to pursue another avenue in the medical field. I just can't imagine myself in a career like nursing, medical assistant, dental assitant or a CNA. It's just not for me. I had a job once in a hospital in insurance verification and absolutely loved it. Lately, I've been thinking more seriously about going back to school. I have been thinking about getting into coding for several years now. But a program director from a nearby technical college told me that coding is heading in the same direction as Medical Transcription. The last thing I want is to obtain another degree that will soon be rendered obsolete. So I have hesitated about pursuing my interest in medical coding.I recently did a search in the Kindle store and stumbled across this book. I was very impressed by the sample chapters, and decided it was worth the $3.99. I'm so glad I did. This book is written in a conversational, easy to read format. It's is not full or jargon or hard to understand lingo. It is very thorough. It enables the reader to hear from people who are actually in the field. It talks about the importance of certification, the future of coding, job prospects, and how to get educated. It talks about what personality types are suited for a career in coding. For someone like me, who had little to no real understanding about what medical coding is and what the job actually entails, this book is invaluable. After reading this book, I feel much more confident about pursuing a career in coding. It put a lot of my fears and hesitations to rest. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a indepth overview of what it really is like to work in the field of medical coding. If you are wondering if a career in medical coding is for you, do yourself a favor, and get a copy of this book. You won't be sorry
This is a good book and a should-read for every medical coding student before they commit to an expensive education. It is not easy to find a job in the coding profession for a student just out of school with no coding experience as I am finding out. I am studying for my CCA exam through AHIMA and this book is part of my professional library as I seek employment as a Medical Coding Professional. It is a good read and some real-life advice. I liked the interviews with other coding professionals as they describe the job and what it's like to be a coder. Eye-opening.
Got the Kindle version. Good info. Would have been good to know at the outset the connection of the author to her online coding school. Vocabulary and punctuation issues; should have been proofread more carefully. Most glaring is ICD which I believe stands for International Classification of Diseases, not Internal Classification of Diseases.
Concise, informative information for medical coders at all levels. I am currently a student in the Physician Based Coding Course offered by Certification Coaching Organization cco.us. Laureen and the entire CCO team and community of members is amazing. The sharing of information is hugely valuable. People take time to explain rationales for coding questions and answers with no judgement. A very supportive environment and completely cost effective.
Really pleased that I purchased this book. I am currently enrolled in an online Medical Coding and Billing course. I do feel that this book gives an accurate overview of the industry. I recommend it to anyone considering this field or any current students in this field. She gives you some important signposts to keep in mind as far as the industry and the professional organizations.
