Not your usual romance, this couple is forty years old and have known each other for forty years. She's over weight,she must be, she over hears her cousins refer to her as bubble butt in the ladies room. Ech! She's a size sixteen. That's not all she over hears. But what's said in the ladies room stays in the ladies room. Oh about the guy, you can't have a romance without a guy can you? He's your average geek, sometimes referred to as the town freak. Lives in bib overalls and never been known to hold a job.
This book started with a powerful situation--a woman at a funeral overhears information about her husband that turns her world upside down, and she is wounded enough to take matters into her own hands and make changes happen right now. And she has many adversaries: her family, the people of the town, her soon-to-be-ex, her grown daughter. Their protests all sound like this: "Get back in line, Trudy. Behave yourself. What will people think?" But for once in her life, Trudy rebels. She becomes her own woman and, because this book is a romance novel, has a chance at love.What I liked about it was the southern flavor and Trudy's wise-cracking narrative. There's a lot of very satisfying emotion, beautiful descriptions, and personal growth, all things that I look for in a book. The ending wasn't the blockbuster I wanted but it was still very satisfying. I liked this book enough to look for more from this author. (PS I tagged it OA fiction and midlife because Trudy is turning 40, but truthfully, she's a little young for those categories.)
This book was soooo boring. I’m really surprised it received such high ratings! Usually any book on amazon with 4.5 stars or above i love, but not this one, and not even close. This book had a very basic non-creative plot. You could see where it was sloooooowly going, and it went right where you expected. I didn’t really like the main character much, and I found the dialogue annoying (over-trying to be cheeky). It had a lot of wordy and irrelevant dialogue and description that I find annoying. I do not recommend this book. I was so glad when it was over (and the only reason I finished it was because I had nothing else to read)
This book starts off great and then flatlines. It's pleasant, but that's about it. I would say this is a fairy tale, but to say that is an insult to the fantasy genre because I've read some in that genre that were more realistic than this book. My main problem with this book is that every problem is solved two pages later in a way that is not true to real life. I think it would have been a more satisfying read if Trudy would have had to struggle to overcome her problems but everything works itself right immediately the moment the problems are presented. People (Including Trudy) change their personalities at the drop of a hat, which never happens. So while it's a cute story and Trudy is a very likeable protagonist, it's very bland. If you're looking for an easy read that doesn't make you think much, this will fit the bill.
This was my first Carolyn Brown read, and I absolutely loved it. One of the reasons I enjoyed this piece so much was because neither the heroine or hero was your "typical" romantic leads. They were staring at the other side of the hill, and living with it fabulously. No washboard abs were seen on the guy, but his heart, and rugged good looks sold me, hands down.And, watching the development of the heroine was outrageous fun. Being a southern gal myself, I found her totally believable, with a big ditto, on the scenes in the ladies room. Yes ma'am, a lot of truth goes down in those ladies' rooms and most of us know to check the stalls before we begin talkin'.If you're a woman with a few years on you (they don't have to be extensive for you to relate) you'll love this read. And, if you're reading in bed with your hubby, or significant other, tell them to put in ear plugs, because whoopin' out loud comes along with the territory!
I recently bought a paper copy of this book just so I can loan it out! I love this story. I have read it on my Kindle at least three times and I love it every time. The main character in this book grows so much it is practically a "coming of age" tale. Even though she is from a good family and married well almost everyone in town thinks Trudy is stupid because so many people in her life routinely lie to her and she hasn't seen through them. She is reaching middle age when a few moments in the ladies room, and the things she overhears, change her life completely.A wonderful author helps us see into Trudy's mind as she feels scared but acts bravely to fight her way out of the false life she has been leading and into a new one of her own choosing. I really enjoy books by Carolyn Brown and that's how I found this excellent story - I look for her books because her characters are real, living through real situations. This book has love, fear, family, faith, anger, sweat, and trucks full of truth.
