I bought this book to study for the 98-366 Microsoft exam so I could get into WGU. Just like everybody else is saying, this book makes a rather drab subject interesting. Also, I did like the information in it, as the info correlated pretty closely to the actual exam. After reading the book, I passed said exam first try within 15 minutes.On a side note, I've noticed a lot of people complaining about the answers to the questions at the end of the chapters not being in the book. Perhaps I got a newer version but the answers to the questions are, in fact, in the book. They are just towards the very back of the book. I didn't know this until I was almost finished with the book because I had read reviews saying the answers weren't in the book, so I didn't bother looking. Just so you know.
I was out of the IT field for over a decade. I read this book cover to cover, studied the questions at the end of each chapter, and passed the test on the first attempt. Granted, the test is considered by many to be easy, but it was not that easy for me. I think after reading this book, my knowledge has increased enough to likely pass the CompTIA Network+ after a bit more studying. This book gives all the academic background needed to understand the common protocols you will likely see on any entry level test you can possibly take for networking. The only thing that would make the series of books better would be to have answer keys included, instead of having to browse the chapter or lookup on the internet. That said, it is a great book for knocking out 98-366.
This book has more than enough information to prep you for the Microsoft Certification. This book is better than the Microsoft Certification study materials by Microsoft themselves. Its certainly cheaper!
I am an Information Systems student and the world of networking is brand new to me. I have found this book very informative and easy to read. The complex concepts are presented well and through a little bit of effort you can understand the different protocols and ideas of networking with this book.
As a library administrator I was given the job of supervising the libraries' computer tech. The only problem was that I had no background whatsoever in computer networking. I purchased Networking Essentials and read it through a couple of times, with lots of highlighting. The book does what it is supposed to do. It takes a very complex subject, and for the most part, explains it in simple terms. After I read the book through twice, my organization purchased a subscription to an online study source, so Networking Essentials and the study source helped me get my certification. If you are starting with little or no knowledge, this is a worthy foundation book.
As a solid IT technician looking to tighten up on my networking knowledge, I have to say that this is a really good book. Easy to understand and straight to the point. Money well spent.
I just used this book to get some general information about Windows networking and have not really had the opportunity to practice with any of the knowledge. I felt like it offered a good baseline for learning some Windows networking essentials.
passed the exam on my first attempt. some things appeared on the exam that weren't covered in the book but overall this is a great study guide
