Still about murder and mystery, but it's non-fiction. "Murder and Mayhem in the Big Apple" chronicles the rise of the Black Hand group to the downfall (that we know of) of its successor, the notorious Murder Incorporated. The author has certainly done his homework for this short true crime book, including many comments from the actual bad guys, and this is where this true crime book doesn't quite do it all for me. As interesting as the events are, there is a flatness to the end of the individual stories. It's not a big deal, but it is there to me.There were so many names (good and bad and stupid) that it was hard to following the main story at times. With a bit more character portrayal, I don't think my mind would have wandered as much as it did. Still, if you are into the history of New York criminals, this is a great place for resource material.One thing it did show is that even for the bad guys, the pull of family and the familiar is strong. It was that pull that was the downfall of so many bad guys as they snuck their way home. I'm kind of glad for their downfall, but there is some kind of social statement that can be made there if I was a social scientist. I don't read much non-fiction, but this is a top shelf 4 to me.
Joe Bruno delivers a hard punch, well researched, no nonsense book. People need to be reminded about dark periods of history. Murder and Mayhem in the Big Apple,From Black Hand to Murder Incorporated uncovers the atrocities committed by men who had neither compassion nor conscience. They lived by power rule of the Corleonesi Mafia who made their bones by killing whomever the bosses said needed to be killed. That rule brought from Corleone, Sicily by Giuseppe Morello and Nick and Vincent Terranova became the Black Hand. Worldwide, in 1880 ,People noticed that the United States was the land of milk and honey. Added to this fact was the law that a three year Grace period existed after which an Italian immigrant became immune to deportation.Fear, hatred,and brutality are brought to our awareness in a most convincing and stark manner. The reader is an observer as chills run up and down the spine. Joe Bruno gives us a glimpse loaded with facts. This history loaded portrayal includes Buggsy Goldstein, Harry Strauss, Happy Malone, Frank Abbandando, Lepke Buchalter,Albert Anastasia and Lucky Luciano. Joe Bruno brings full realism to play and bear upon our psyches.
Just my preference but I like to become a little immersed in a book. I read mostly non-fiction so this should have been right up my alley. However, it read more like a very well prepared term paper. A lot of names were dropped with little character development. Vito was an Italian, Vito came to Brooklyn, Vita shot Mario, Bugsy and Slick then served time got out and got murdered. Donnie Brisco and other great books on the period may have set too high a standard. However, the editing is first rate. I felt like the short length and content should make this a lower rating but the editing kicked it up a star or two.
I really enjoy the stories that Mr. Bruno writes about you always learn something new.. If you like Mobster books then this is a book for you.. or if you just like to read as I do then you might like this book as well. Thank you Mr. Bruno.
Riveting, chilling, enthralling are just a few words that I would use to describe the story of these mafia leaders and followers as told by Joe Bruno. It is a must read for anyone that is interested in the inner workings of these criminal mindsets and doings.
The book was quite an easy read. The author does a good job of capsulizing the early history of organized crime and the Mafia. I would be greatly interested in more books from this author.
