Review

"The Wolf at the Door is a down-home, insightful glimpse into a complex and often heart-wrenching form of elder abuse: when loved ones exploit trust and predators prey on the vulnerable. Drawing from decades of experience, Michael Hackard explains the vagaries of predators' maneuvers and victims' motivations. The book is replete with anecdotes, case studies, and research findings that help readers understand elder financial abuse and the remedies that exist to combat it. Hackard offers an honest appraisal of the legal system's promise and its limitations as well as a candid account of his own wins and losses. It is storytelling at its best-- engaging and empowering." --LISA NERENBERG (MSW, MPH), executive director of the California Elder Justice Coalition"Fighting elder abuse is a team effort that must involve family, friends, and society at large. The key to fighting crimes against the elderly is knowledge and preventing it from happening in the first place. Written by an experienced and caring attorney, The Wolf at the Door gives excellent warnings and tips on how to protect your elderly loved ones." --MARK FAIRALL, founder of The Real Faces of Elder Abuse"The Wolf at The Door is clear, concise, and well-written. Michael Hackard makes the complex and difficult subject of elder financial abuse easy for the public to understand. The book not only provides valuable information, it also explores the options victims of abuse and their families have." --NEIL GRANGER, chairman of the California Department of Insurance Curriculum Board"Mr. Hackard is clearly a 'sage' full of wise advice. He shares his knowledge and experience in a clear, easy-to-read, conversational tone. As an elder law attorney I've been approached by loved ones concerned about exploitations wanting to understand what it looks like or what to expect in a lawsuit. Now I have a resource to share with them. Anyone concerned about elder exploitation (past or future) would do well to read this book." --APRIL D. HILL, Florida Bar Board Certified Elder Law Specialist, Nationally Certified Elder Law Attorney"In my experience, 'the wolf at the door' is a real threat. As a financial advisor, I've witnessed the problem of elder financial abuse grow by leaps and bounds. Plus, I experienced it firsthand when a member of my immediate family fell victim to a scam. The financial losses exceeded $100,000--not to mention the loss of pride, self-esteem, and confidence. The Wolf at the Door is an all-in-one guide and reference book. It provides helpful tips and strategies for identifying and dealing with situations where financial abuse may be occurring. It also covers the various types of abuse, which helps readers to better protect themselves and their loved ones in the future. Awareness is critical, because prevention is needed at the point of attack. Once money is lost, it is gone forever. I commend Michael Hackard for sharing his insights and perspectives. In doing so, he's helping to stem the rapid growth of this epidemic of crime against our most vulnerable citizens." --PAUL HYNES, founder of SeniorSafeAndSound.org and president and CEO of HearthStone Private Wealth Management

From the Author

Many years ago, early in my second decade of law practice, my mother's family was affected by elder financial abuse, and the effects have had a profound impact on my life in the subsequent years. At that time, the focus of my law practice was on land use law, a distant relative of trust, estate, and probate litigation--so distant, in fact, that I had no idea how to protect my family and challenge the wrongdoer who was harming them. When the incident occurred, I had the same feelings of ambivalence, frustration, impotence, and injustice that most family members of elder financial abuse victims have. Even the right questions seemed elusive. Who do I ask for help? Will those I seek help from think that I'm greedy and just out for myself? How do I prove that what I'm doing is to protect my relative? Will federal, state, or local legal authorities assist our family to right an obvious wrong? Is it true that a wrongdoer can delay or deny justice by forcing the victim's family to wage a costly, estate-depleting legal defense? The damage from elder financial abuse isn't just monetary. I've seen how estate disputes split families and inflict deep wounds that may take generations to heal. Such inheritance disputes are as old as history and are even referenced in Scripture . . .

I liked that I related to all of those stepmothers who had their stepchildren trying to get the money that their father shared with his wife of many years instead of his children. I like this book because I see here an honest, caring lawyer that addresses the problem of the greedy, avaricious children. I like his examples of unfair and unnatural transaction. He talks about "the elder's long- held estate plan to split assets equally among his or her effectively null and void." Thank God, I am one who has persevered and I can afford to continue. I would like every stepmother who has been confronted with this type of situation to read this book sooner than the almost 6 years that I have been in litigation. I have friends that might have benefited by reading this book. Since no 2 people are alike, Michael Hackard can only give so many examples of undue the elder financial abuse that I can relate to but what he tells in this book makes me feel very good in that I am fighting a disease that is taking over this country with the aid of despicable lawyers and people in supposed authority. Mr. Hackard wrote this book to help all of us who find ourselves in this position. He advises in this book to find the best lawyer as soon as possible. On page 120, he quotes from the American Bar Association's Model Rules of Professional Conduct: Preamble & Scope:A lawyer's conduct should conform to the requirements of the law, both in professional service to clients and in the lawyer's business and personal affairs. A lawyer should use the law's procedures only for legitimate purposes and not to harass or intimidate others. A lawyer should demonstrate respect for the legal system and for those who serve it, including judges, other lawyers and public official. While it is a lawyer's duty, when necessary, to challenge the rectitude of official action, it is also a lawyer's duty to uphold legal process.

This book is so true! I'm going through this myself with my grredy, unscrupulous brother manipulating my mother who has dementia. He had her sign a new DPOA removing me as secondary & removed me completely from her trust giving him 100%. Elderly services can't do anything, legal services can't do anything....I don't know where to turn.

This wonderfully educational book came at the perfect time for a quick read. The laws explained within the book are easy to understand and help assist the layperson in guidance regarding the depths of financial elder abuse and the subsequent harm it can cause a family. It is a self-guided manual on how to recognize signs of elder abuse, the various roles played by financial institutions and estate representatives, to the courses of action one can take to remedy these types of situations. With his forty plus years of legal experience, Michael Hackard is a natural – which shows through his eloquent, yet effortless, writing of this book. He seems to have experienced every type of elder financial abuse situation through his legal practice and has even dealt with these situations in his personal life. He lends practical tools to the everyday reader and allows us to be informed by answering common questions with useful advice. This book is definitely a must-read if you are confronted with probate and/or civil litigation or if you simply wish to balance your moral compass in recognition of detecting financial elder abuse within the community.

Written for all audiences, The Wolf at the Door is the first I've seen of its kind. Even for someone with a legal background such as myself, reading it has been an enjoyable AND educational experience. The laws explained in this book are easy to understand; Mike Hackard somehow teaches us all many lessons from his extensive experience while simultaneously reminding us that we are not alone, providing a sense of comfort in an uncomfortable world, every step of the way. This book touches on every aspect of financial elder abuse that I could possibly think of: the forms of abuse, the motives behind them, the types of legal counsel and mediators possibly involved, government agencies that aim to help, the role of financial institutions, roles of trustees and estate representatives, ways in which to detect, and most certainly the many courses of action that can be taken to prevent, protect loved ones and yourself from, and remedy financial elder abuse. No matter your profession, everyone loses a loved one, and everyone encounters the substance of this book. Mike Hackard seems to naturally and effortlessly understand the concerns any of us could have, and allows us to be informed and educated by answering our many questions before we've even figured out a way to ask.Thank you, Mr. Hackard!

A Wolf at the Door provides an excellent discussion of elder financial abuse and undue influence. Well written and approachable. Michael Hackard's book exposes the tactics of wrongdoers who would exploit elders for their own gain. It's a wake-up call for anyone concerned that it's happening to a loved-one. The relate-able anecdotes drawing from years of experience litigating these cases provide powerful and eye-opening descriptions of the tactics and strategies too often used to exploit the elderly. Most importantly, the Wolf at the Door does an outstanding job of letting those who witness elder exploitation know that they need not feel helpless, and that justice can be done!

Excellent book! Elder financial abuse/undue influence is, unfortunately, more or less 'legalized' by the legal system and our society in general, absent any real penalty for committing such heinous acts and due to the costs involved in litigation. That's why it's becoming an epidemic. It happened to me with an aunt with some wolf like relatives. And it can happen to you, too.

This book is a wonderful read for anyone caring for or will be caring for elderly loved ones. The book is well written and easy to comprehend. I found the scenarios were true to life and have even happened with my own family. Very informative and the information that is provided needs to get out in communities everywhere as we all deal with caring for our aging loved ones.
